One of the works in our show is Ben Cauchi’s tintype “The Photographer’s Hand (a tribute)”, 2006 (23 x 19cm). But it’s very hard to reproduce here the qualities of depth within the image adequately. I asked Ben to whom was it a “tribute”? He referred me to the Southworth and Hawes (Boston) daguerreotype of Captain J.W. Walker’s branded hand (branded SS, signifying “slave saviour” or “slave stealer” depending on which side you were on). Clearly he knows his p’s and q’s when it comes to his antecedents…
