We stopped to photograph (in the style of Jon Rhodes) a scar tree near Broulee on the New South Wales south coast. The faded red script once read “KKK”. Makes your skin crawl.

When on a field trip to visit indigenous sites along the coastline at Jervis Bay with Shirley Campbell, archaeologist Brian Egloff and Uni Can students I was told by that the KKK had its first organised group in Australia at Nowra. Of course, none of this horrifying importation of a US racist group could have been included in Brian’s (successful) research for Native Title at Wreck Bay and further south, Wallaga Lake.

Thanks Chris. I wonder if anyone’s ever published anything about it?

Well, yes, I wonder. Both Shirley and Brian are American. We had passionate discussions about indigenous issues (both here and in the US) when we stayed at the university’s little centre at Jervis Bay village. Of course, the entire NSW coastline is littered with so many indigenous sites – they are everywhere that the earthmoving machines and developers haven’t been. For example, at Jervis Bay, I have articles that Brian gave me on over 300 designated indigenous sites just on the land’e edge (cliffs etc). Brian’s writing should be available. But not sure about the KKK being mentioned in writing. Shirley Campbell was at the ANU but not sure of her whereabouts now.
