In Beyond the Frame (Weekend Australian Review, Nov 3-4, 2007, p18) art critic Sebastian Smee reviews Jon Rhodes’ exhibition Cage of Ghosts at the National Library of Australia until 25th November, 2007. Smee introduces his review of the NGA inaugural triennial of indigenous art Culture Warriors by commenting on the surfeit of monuments and memorials in Canberra: “This struck me with particular force when… I hit upon a fascinating exhibition of photographs by Jon Rhodes called Cage of Ghosts… Rhodes’ photographs are great anthropology. But against expectations, they tell us more about modern Australian culture and its thirst for symbols than about indigenous culture.” Read Howard Morphy’s opening speech plus recent posts on this and ArtWranglers’ recent Jon Rhodes exhibition at his gallery in the side-bar ->
