Here’s the transcript of his speech.
Here’s the key words: involuntary sacrifices; harshness exceeded only by the land; disputed in motive and detail; rescued children deserved a better life; best of intentions; removal from squalor led to better lives; no compensation fund, nor should there be; separation was then, and remains today, a painful but necessary part of public policy…
Then he turns to shaming those who were present, quote: hospitalisation of women from assault; sexual abuse of Aboriginal children; a four year old girl drowned by being raped; two children – one a baby- sexually assaulted by two men, baby stabbed by a man trying to kill her mother; its endemic nature.
You might ask: what has that to do with the Stolen generations? Do we read into Hansard the sexual crimes of non-Indigenous society? Now, please read it in context. He concludes with an apology to: “… all who have made sacrifices for us by the way we live our lives…” Shameful speech. Shameful behaviour.
